Glen Johnson argues that stabilizing the ship should be Ruben Amorim’s first goal at Manchester United.
Erik ten Hag’s time as Red Devils manager came to an abrupt end last month following a disorganized conclusion to the last campaign and an equally disorganized start to this one. A successor was quickly found in Amorim after Ruud van Nistelrooy filled the void.
Arriving with United in 13th place in the Premier League, but only four points from third, the former Sporting CP manager vows to introduce a completely new tactical philosophy to Old Trafford. There is still a chance for United to salvage their season and make a daring attempt to place in the top four if Amorim can start off strongly.
Johnson, who made 200 appearances for Liverpool, believes the 39-year-old should not be landing with any particular goals in mind, but rather to simply try to stop United’s present turbulent behavior.
“I don’t believe it would be like, ‘The goal for the season is to place fifth.'” In reference to Amorim’s visit, Johnson told 10bet, “I believe it will be to come in and steady the ship, let the dust settle.”
Instead of getting ahead of ourselves, let’s take it slow and set ourselves up to compete from the beginning of the following season.
They still have the season left, and while they are capable of having a strong run, their best chance would be to contend for a spot in the top four as they are not likely to win the league.
“For Amorim, it’s more about building so they’re competitive for the next 3-4 years, not just finishing as high as they can this season. He will be playing the long game.”
Amorim has previously discussed his expectations for Old Trafford, telling reporters during his final Sporting match that he thinks things will be challenging.
